New York Fashion Week focuses highly on showcasing contemporary and streetwear styles, think Off-White, Heron Preston, and Pyer Moss. It is more influenced by recent and cultural events, using fashion to create a story. 

In contrast, Paris Fashion Week emphasizes high fashion and Haute Couture, think Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton, all of these established brands that have been around for decades. The highlight of Paris is the Haute Couture pieces that focus highly on elevated tailoring, high-quality materials, and skillful craftsmanship. Paris is always innovating and bringing fashion to the next level.

Both New York and Paris Fashion Week shows occur throughout the cities, however, Paris is much smaller than New York City which drastically limits what designers can use to showcase their work. Paris only has an area of 105 square kilometers, compared to New York City’s 826 square kilometers, so it is understandable why Paris Fashion Shows tend to be inside a venue rather than outside.

New York Fashion Week is generally more diverse, and there are usually more seats dedicated to Journalists and Media coverage for brands to get more Press. Perhaps this helps emerging designers more as well and it boasts of a colorful fashion scene in New York City. 

Paris Fashion Week on the other hand is more upscale and fashion-focused. Typically more buyers and industry professionals will be dominating the seats in comparison to New York. In the Dior Show, you can easily spot Anna Wintour and if you look closely you can probably find even more established industry professionals amongst the packed crowd at Dior during Paris Fashion Week.

It is more traditional in the sense that they respect their roots, for example, well-established designer brands don’t steer away from what made them famous such as Chanel’s iconic Tweed which can always be seen on the runway, and Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogram.

New York Fashion Week is usually 6 days long for instance, in 2023 New York Fashion Week was from February 10 to February 15 whilst Paris Fashion week is typically 9 to 10 days long.

Both New York and Paris influence the world globally, New York might have more press coverage and influence fashion trends worldwide simply because of their ability to appreciate different cultures all in one fashion week. Not to mention they also host the most fashion designers however, Paris will always hold the spot for high fashion and Haute Couture, being the place for all fashion aficionados to learn from and admire.
